Buying Tips

Fairway woods are the clubs you'll reach into your bag for powerful, long-range shots when you're too far out to pull an iron. Choosing the right one makes a huge difference in how you play those long par-4s or par-5s. But you don’t have to overspend to get high-performance fairway woods in your bag. You'll find competitive, often discounted prices at Rock Bottom Golf on name-brand gear from TaylorMade, Callaway, Cobra, and more!

Want even more value? Check out our pre-owned fairway woods for great prices without sacrificing performance.

Tip 1. Choose Loft Based on Your Ideal Launch and Landing

Fairway woods have more loft than drivers, which helps you launch the ball higher and land it softer. This is perfect for long par-4s or second shots into par-5s. The 3-wood (usually around 15°) is often used as an alternative to the driver for players who want distance with a bit more control, but it can be harder for beginners to launch cleanly off the turf.

The 5-wood (in the 18-19° range) offers more forgiveness, a higher ball flight, and is easier for most golfers to hit, which is why so many golfers bag one. If you're hitting into greens from a long way out, that extra loft helps the ball stop more quickly. Many modern fairway woods even feature adjustable hosels, so you can fine-tune the loft and dial in your perfect launch angle.

Tip 2. Pay Attention to Head Design and How It Interacts with Turf

The head of a fairway wood is bigger than an iron’s, giving you more forgiveness and distance. However, the way it’s shaped underneath can make or break your shot. If you tend to hit fat shots or struggle with clean turf contact, look for a fairway wood with a shallow face and a rounded or rail-style sole. These features help the club glide through grass more smoothly and reduce the chances of digging into the ground. This is especially helpful for players with shallower swing paths or those who want more versatility from tight lies, rough, or even fairway bunkers.

Tip 3. Fill the Distance Gap in Your Bag Strategically

Fairway woods are all about gapping, which means plugging the space between your driver and your longest iron or hybrid. To find the right fit, focus on carry distances rather than club numbers.

Consider a typical setup:

  • Driver carry: 250 yards
  • Longest iron (e.g., 4-iron): 180 yards
  • Fairway wood recommendation: A 5-wood carrying 210 to 220 yards

That 30 to 40 yard gap is where your fairway wood shines. Some players also turn to 7-woods or even 9-woods for high-launching, easy-to-hit alternatives to long irons. These are especially helpful for moderate swing speeds or tricky approach angles.
