Great Performance, Short Life
December 7, 2009
I bought a loose 3-dozen pack of the Tour Deep because I wanted to play the ball that carried the name behind my clubs - and I might not be able to for much longer, since Callaway has killed the Ben Hogan brand name.
I have played one full round - 18 holes - with the Tour Deep, and one 9-hole round on a local par-3 course that I like for short game practice. I don't have a lot of experience with a wide variety of balls, but this ball's performance throughout the bag is excellent, in my opinion. I wasn't giving away any distance, that I could tell, to my playing partners in the 18-hole round, all of whom are more experienced, and longer hitters than me; and the feel around and on the greens, where my game is focused, is excellent.
The only drawback to the Tour Deep is its short life. The thin outer cover is not the most durable, and I replaced the ball after 9 holes, both on the full round and the 9-hole round on the par-3. At this price, though, that is not a big issue. I'll keep playing these balls for as long as I can still buy them.
Pros:Stable flight, good distance, good feel in short game
