Ben Hogan has long believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break 80 if he applies himself intelligently -- and here, with Herbert Warren Wind, and artist Anthony Ravielli, he tells you, step by step, just how to go about it. The greatest golfer of our generation has distilled his experience as teacher, player, and observer of golf into a series of richly illustrated "visual instructions" that not only can improve your game and lower your score, but also can help you get even more fun out of what many people already think is the most enjoyable game in the world. Each chapter, each tested "fundamental" is explained and demonstrated with amazing detail and clarity. It's as though the master himself were right there at your elbow, giving you a personal lesson with the same thought and care that has gone into his lifetime of golf. The Modern Fundamentals of Golf is no instant and easy shortcut. There is none. But with Ben Hogan as your pro, you can master these basic movements very quickly. And then you can go on to develop a correct, powerful swing that will repeat. As Ben Hogan says, it's only then that you'll "discover golf for the first time."

I'm still relatively new to golf and have lots of room for improvement. This book focuses on good fundamentals for all players. It's easy to read through or refer back to a particular section. Simple diagrams help understand each lesson.

What about Putting?
July 3, 2015
I read this book about 30 years ago when I first started playing golf . . . I loved it then, and it helped me a lot with fundamentals, grip, swing, etc. It still rings true, and re-reading has already helped tighten up some loose areas in my game. But it's a good thing that I also bought Jack Nicklaus's "Putting My Way" at the same time, because apparently, as Jack notes, putting wasn't a fundamental to Mr Hogan . . . I don't understand that. But hey! What do I know?
ProsGood read, incredible descriptions of what happens during the golf swing
ConsNothing about putting . . . apparently it wasn't a part of the game that Mr Hogan worried too much about.

Most all golfers know of this book; it's as good as you've probably heard. The golf swing is broken down into the simple, essential pieces and for me the feedback was immediate.

This book makes you go back to square one and reinforce the basics. It amazes me it was written in 1951 but is still so useful today with all our fancy equipment.

Read Hogan's book, then watch film of Sam Snead swing. Hogan was no doubt the professor of the swing. Slammin' Sammy was the fluid feel player who won more PGA tournaments than anyone.
ProsGreat on fundamentals of the grip, setup/address, and swing....right down to where the callouses should be on the hands.
ConsOne gets the feeling Hogan held a little back for himself.

I've just read the first one and a half chapters, and I like it so far. It's really hard to change my grip, so I don't want to go too far until I get that right. I am getting better distance and more consistency, so it's working.
ProsGood explanations and pictures

This book provides excellent clear instruction with beautiful illustrations that help to reinforce the simple but powerful concepts that the arguably greatest ball striker of all time is relating. Hopefully with some practice to ingrain these concepts I can break 80 this summer.

I'm an avid reader and subscriber to Golf Digest, I only say this as I wasn't sure this book would provide me any new information to help my game. WAS I WRONG! A friend recommended this book and once I received it I couldn't put it down. There are only five lessons, each of which you practice for a simple 30 minutes each day and the results have been nothing short of fantastic. This book is simply about mastering the basics.
